Both Ronnie Mitchell and Kat Slater have become close friends lately, and it's no surprise really as they both have a lot in common. Kat gave birth to Zoe when she was just 14 after being abused by her Uncle Harry and later suffered a miscarriage while carrying Doctor Trueman's baby. Ronnie also gave birth at 14 to daughter Danielle who tragically died after Ronnie found out her real identity, Ronnie was also abused by Father Archie and suffered a miscarriage with Owen's baby. Now both woman are expecting there babies at the same time, and hoping for a fresh start and a happy ever after, but unfortunately in true soap fashion neither of these woman are going to get what they want.

It all starts when Jean Slater decides to admit herself back into the psychiatric hospital and tells Ronnie that her baby is coming tomorrow before leaving in a taxi. Ronnie is a bit taken back by Jeans premonition and is left wondering if it will come true.

Sure enough the next day Ronnie goes into labour as predicted and as Jack is away and she has fallen out with her sister, she decides to go to the hospital alone on the train. While on the tube she runs into Heather and tells her that she is in labour. Later on in the pub Heather tells a shocked Roxy and Glenda of Ronnie's whereabouts, Glenda doesn't seem bothered by the news of her daughters labour but Roxy rushes of to be by her sisters side.

At first Ronnie tells Roxy to go away but as baby James is born, the two excited sisters kiss and make up, and its not long before the family start arriving at the hospital to celebrate the latest edition, but not everyone is welcome as when Dot and Max are leaving they bump into Glenda and when Dot informs the new Granny that her daughter Ronnie needs to rest she goes in anyway only to be told by Roxy to come back another day. Meanwhile Jack phones wife Ronnie from Dubai and tells her he will be home very soon, but nothing can bring a excited Ronnie down, as she lies cradling the baby she has always wanted.

Meanwhile back at the pub after yet another false alarm, Mo and Alfie are getting annoyed with Kat's contractions which they accuse her of 'exagerating' believing them to be nothing more than braxton hicks. Kat's Dad Charlie believes they could be the real thing until he realises his daughter just wanted attention. But later on while Kat is in the store room, her waters break as she goes into full blown labour but no one hears her screams for help. When Alfie and the Slater clang finally get to her she is to far gone and Nan Mo delivers the baby then and there. Kat gives birth to a healthy baby boy and the whole pub give a cheer.

Later on Alfie is proudly showing of about Baby Tommy round the square as Ronnie arrives in a taxi with Baby James, the two new parents joke about how there two sons will grow up together and become the best of friends, Alfie even buys the two boys matching baby grows. When Alfie arrives back at the pub he finds wife Kat has been bleeding heavy and suffering withsevere shooting pains. A worried Alfie leaves baby Tommy with Charlie and rushes Kat into hospital where they are told that some of the placenta was left inside Kat and she is very weak and needs to stay in to rest. Kat tells Alfie she wants Baby Tommy with her so Alfie leaves the hospital to pick him up.

Meanwhile back at the Queen Vic, the new years party is in full swing with all the residents there to see in the new year. Charlie Slater can hear the celebrations from the pub and decides to leave his sleeping grandson and go join in the fun downstairs.

Over at Jack and Ronnie's flat, the new Mum goes to check on her baby and is distraught when she discovers his fingers are blue and he is not breathing, a desperate Ronnie frantically tries to warm him up with a blanket convincing herself he will start breathing again. Cradling baby James she runs to the neighbours to try and get some help but everyone is at the pub. Ronnie starts screaming and crying, but the loud music from the pub means her cries go unheard. One of the saddest scenes is when Ronnie bangs on her mum Glenda's door and she shouts "Mummy" Ronnie is like a child reaching out to the mother who rejected her. Ronnie runs over to the pub in a complete state of shock, but as she walks through the side door she hears Kat's baby crying upstairs. Ronnie then peers into his cot and says "That's my boy", before swapping Kat's new baby for hers, at this point Ronnie is so confused and numb that she can not separate truth from fiction. When she arrives back at her flat along with Kat's baby she realises what she has done, she changes her mind and immediately goes to put Kat's baby back but Roxy arrives for a visit and then Jack returns home to meet his son for the first time, and so she ends up keeping him.

The next day Ronnie begins to realise what she has done and the consequences of her actions, and when Roxy visits her sister and finds her in tears she just puts it down to postnatal depression. Over at the pub Kat arrives home from hospital to find paramedics in the bedroom and can be heard screaming when she discovers her baby has passed away. The next day Alfie and Kat arrive at the hospital where they are ushered into the bereavement suite to see there baby, but as Alfie turns around Kat has disappeared, she is later seen walking bare foot through the square and up to her flat above the pub where she just sits and stares at the empty cot. Later on Alfie returns to find wife Kat in the dark holding a baby grow for baby Tommy, they then break down in each others arms and return to the hospital to say their final goodbye's to their beloved son. When they arrive at the hospital Kat takes a deep breath and then looks into the mosses basket, but as Alfie emotionally strokes the baby's cheek, Kat screams "That's not my baby Alfie, that's not my baby."

Over the other side of the square Ronnie is finding it difficult to bond with the baby she knows is not hers, and is also trying to stay out of every one's way fearing she will be found out. Jack has returned home from Dubai and instantly bonds with the baby he believes to be his son. Ronnie however is unable to breastfeed the baby and later she secretly mourns the loss of her real son James while smelling the last blanket her baby was wrapped in. Roxy then arrives at the flat to break the news about Kat and Alfie's baby, and when Ronnie starts to cry, husband Jack secretly phones the midwife asking for some help with Ronnie's postnatal depression. Ronnie panics even more when the next day she See's a police car pull up outside The Queen Vic but Jack reassures his wife that it is just routine, however things for Ronnie become even worse when the local midwife pays a visit to do her routine check, and it looks like Ronnie is nearly found out, when the Midwife appears concerned that Baby James has lost weight and the club foot that was recorded on his notes has now disappeared, but it turns out the midwife is more concerned about Ronnie, believing she is suffering from baby blues, quick thinking Ronnie tells the midwife that she is upset about her friends baby who has just passed away and is struggling to understand how it happened.

Later on the police turn up at Charlie Slater's house, but Charlie is so overcome with grief and guilt that he refuses to answer the door to them. Meanwhile Jack is telling brother Max how Ronnie is struggling and so Max suggests that they bring baby James over to his house later for a small party so everyone can meet James. However Ronnie refuses to go so the Branning's decide to visit her instead, but when they all arrive Ronnie tells them all that James is asleep and no one can see him, the guests then hear Jack and Ronnie rowing in the bedroom.

Jack accuses Ronnie of being too over protective and Ronnie tells him she is just scared because of what happened to Kat's baby. Ronnie then keeps looking out of the window convinced the police are coming for her. Meanwhile Kat discovers that her father Charlie left her little boy on his own and cant forgive him. Charlie already feels overwhelmed with guilt and so he packs a bag and heads of to the station, but will Kat and Alfie be able to stop him in time?

Alfie and Jack both go to register the births of their Sons which is very hard for Alfie but after an awkward bonding moment with Jack they end up becoming close friends, and while Alfie is arranging the funeral a grieving Kat is still struggling to accept her babies gone. The funeral takes place on the 11th January and although Ronnie tries her best to stay away, something inside her wills her to go and say goodbye to her son. As the service begins, Ronnie begins to cry and says her own little goodbye to her child.

The day after the funeral, Kat begins to seek comfort in Ronnie and her baby, but can Ronnie keep up the pretence when Kat is crying on her shoulder? also Kat and Alfie's marriage looks like it is in trouble when Alfie tries to keep things normal for the sake of his wife, but poor Kat See's it as Alfie forgetting about her baby and questions whether she can even be with Alfie anymore, the situation is not helped when the real father Micheal Moon turns up on the square to meet his new son only to be told the baby has sadly passed away. Will Michael's arrival spell trouble for Kat and Alfie?

Im afraid Kat will not find out the truth until at least April, Eastenders were planning on dragging it out even longer but because of the huge number of complaints they have recieved the EE writers are busy rewritting the scripts and bringing the story to a end by April at the earliest.

I lost a baby at birth a number of years ago and due to a surgery which went wrong some years ago I cannot carry a child. I don't have children, but i am happily married eventhough I feel heart broken and lonely at times, during my lowest ebb I would never have stolen someone elses child to make up for my own loss. Infertile women get enough stick already without trying to make us out to be total mad women!! Why didn't eastenders concentrate on doing a feature on the 'bad' parenting apparent in society today, as a teacher I work with children who are neglected by their parents, children who attend school with their clothes and hair smelling of cigarette smoke, sometimes with no lunches, their personal hygiene and clothes are unwashed and many of their little faces are with drawn or tired from irregualr routines! some mothers under estimate and abuse their privileges.

This story line has got to end now. It is unfair to expect viewers to sit through any more of the disturbing scenes being shown as part of this story line. While I understand that EastEnders deals with sensitive issues, this story has been dealt with insensetively and inappropriately.
